Spooky Month Recommendations – Graphic Novels & Manga

Welcome to the first of three recommendation posts for the spookiest time of the year. October is really the only month that I usually try to “theme” what I read, and I thought it would be fun to share some suggestions that are perfect for this time of year.

This time I’ll be sharing some great graphic novel and manga suggestions. And next time I’ll be listing children and young adult books perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit.

Horror + Pulp = Awesomeness The artwork is amazing and the whole vibe of this series is just perfect for this time of year.

Doc Horror knows there are sinister forces at work trying to bring the downfall of the human race. They have already ravaged his home planet, and now he has traveled to Earth to try and stop them once and for all. Once here, however, he finds that this world’s inhabitants aren’t all sweetness and light themselves. Some of them are busy creating freakish mutations out of their fellow man, and others are helping the invaders in their quest for domination. An outcast, Doc Horror is forced to live by the dark of night, and there he finds compatriots who must also shun the light of day. Polychrome, The Gunwitch, Starfish, Firelion, Komodo, and The Raccoon have all their share of knocks from humanity, but they want to save their homeworld anyway, and they don’t care how many monsters stand in their way.

For fans of body horror

Something is rotten in Okinawa…

The floating smell of death hangs over the island. What is it? A strange, legged fish appears on the scene… So begins Tadashi and Kaori’s spiral into the horror and stench of the sea.

Absolutely gorgeous artwork and the stories are all so interesting. If you like stories where the real monsters are all too human then this would be right up your ally.

A smoke-filled alley in Chinatown harbors Count D’s Pet Shop. The pets sold here aren’t your everyday variety and the Count prides himself on selling Love and Dreams in the form of magical creatures that come with an exclusive contract. But buyers beware. If the contract is broken the Count cannot be held accountable for whatever may happen. A fascinating and macabre look into the very soul of human nature.

This one kept me guessing until the end, and and feeling all the feels. I don’t want to give away too much but trust me you want to pick this one up.

Everything you thought you knew about witches is wrong. They are much darker, and they are much more horrifying. When the Rooks family moves to the remote town of Litchfield, NH to escape a haunting trauma, they’re hopeful about starting over. But something evil is waiting for them in the woods just beyond town. Watching from the trees. Ancient…and hungry.

If you end up picking up one of these let me know what you thought!
